How do I acquire survivor points?

I've been wondering how to customise my character so that I can be distinctive around the servers whether it be as a group that I will be creating or just to stand out from the civilian models. I've noticed that theres no form of customisation that can be looted through in-game and you can only select your skin premade in the selection screen - even there theres just a limited amount of models to choose from unless you have these 'survivor points' so how do you acquire these?
